Leicester City 2016, the greatest underdog story in sports

Nathan Avatar

Leicester City won the 2015/16 Premier League title as a 5000/1 outsider, the longest odds ever placed on a champion in any major sport. A team that had fought relegation the previous spring finished 10 points clear of Arsenal. No story in modern soccer comes close.

How it started

Leicester began the season as favorites to go down, not up. In April 2015 they had been bottom of the table with nine games left, saved only by a late surge under Nigel Pearson that turned survival into escape. When Pearson was dismissed that summer, almost nobody expected his replacement to change the club’s trajectory.

Claudio Ranieri arrived to open mockery. The Italian had just been fired by Greece after a loss to the Faroe Islands, and English pundits treated his hiring as a punchline. What followed rewrote his legacy and the sport’s record books.

The Ranieri effect

Ranieri did not rebuild Leicester, he refined it. He kept the direct 4-4-2 that suited his squad, added defensive structure, and trusted a core of players the rest of England had overlooked. His calm approach turned a survival group into believers, and his famous pizza reward for a clean sheet became part of the folklore.

The tactics were simple and lethal. Leicester sat deep, absorbed pressure, then broke at speed through the fastest counterattack in the league. They finished with a modest share of possession yet the most ruthless transitions anyone had seen that decade.

The players nobody wanted

Leicester’s title was built on players signed for pocket change. Jamie Vardy had been playing non league soccer three years earlier while working in a factory that made medical splints. Leicester paid around 1 million pounds for him in 2012, and by 2016 he was the most feared striker in England.

Vardy scored in 11 straight Premier League games that season, breaking the record of 10 held by Ruud van Nistelrooy. He finished with 24 league goals and ran defenses ragged with pace no back line could handle.

Riyad Mahrez cost roughly 400,000 pounds from French second division side Le Havre. The Algerian winger produced 17 goals and endless magic on the right, and he was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the first African player to win the award.

Then came N’Golo Kanté, bought from Caen for about 5.6 million pounds. The midfielder covered so much ground that fans joked the pitch was 70 percent grass and 30 percent Kanté. He broke up attacks and launched them in the same motion.

Behind them stood a spine that never cracked. Kasper Schmeichel, son of the Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, guarded the goal. Captain Wes Morgan and Robert Huth formed a stubborn central defense, while Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton did the quiet work that champions need.

The turning point

The moment Leicester became genuine contenders came at the turn of the year, when the doubters expected the collapse that never arrived. Rival managers kept predicting a slip. Instead Leicester kept winning the tight games that champions win, grinding out 1-0 results and holding leads that better funded teams would have lost.

The title was sealed on May 2, 2016, without Leicester even playing. Tottenham needed to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to keep their own hopes alive, and when that game ended 2-2, the championship belonged to Leicester. The players had gathered at Vardy’s house to watch, and the room erupted as the final whistle blew.

Why it will never happen again

Leicester’s triumph stands alone because the economics of soccer make it almost impossible to repeat. The club’s entire starting eleven cost less than a single star at Manchester City or Chelsea. The gap between the richest clubs and everyone else has only widened since that spring.

That is what makes 2016 sacred to soccer fans. It was proof that spending does not always win, that a group of rejects and bargains could beat the machine. For one season the sport’s natural order broke, and a city of underdogs lifted the trophy in front of the world.
