The Croatia national football team represents Croatia in international association football and is governed by the Croatian Football Federation, which was founded in 1912. The team competes under the nickname the Chequered Ones, a reference to the red and white checked pattern on the national kit and coat of arms. Croatia has been a consistent presence at major international tournaments since gaining independence in the early 1990s, finishing third at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and reaching the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where they were runners-up to France.
The squad has historically produced technically accomplished midfielders and defenders, and the current generation continues that tradition. Notable players in the present setup include goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, defenders Duje Caleta-Car, Martin Erlic, and Josko Gvardiol, and goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski.
