Ecuador's national football team, known as La Tri, represents the country in international association football and is governed by the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol, founded in 1925. The team competes in CONMEBOL, South America's governing body, and qualifies through the regional qualifying rounds for the FIFA World Cup. Ecuador qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 2002 and has appeared in the tournament on several occasions since, reaching the round of sixteen in 2006. The team has not won a major senior international title.
The squad draws players from clubs across South America and Europe. Among the current notable players are goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez, defenders Willian Pacho and Félix Torres, and midfielders and forwards including Moisés Caicedo, who has established himself at the highest level of European club football. Other recognized players in the current generation include Gonzalo Plata, Ángel Mena, and those named in the federation's recent selections such as Gerzon Valle and Jeremy Sarmiento.
