Leicester City won the 2015/16 Premier League title as a 5000/1 outsider, the longest odds ever placed on a champion in any major sport. A team that had fought relegation the previous spring finished 10 points clear of Arsenal. No story in modern soccer comes close.

How it started
Leicester began the season as favorites to go down, not up. In April 2015 they had been bottom of the table with nine games left, saved only by a late surge under Nigel Pearson that turned survival into escape. Behind them stood a spine that never cracked. Kasper Schmeichel, son of the Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, guarded the goal. Captain Wes Morgan and Robert Huth formed a stubborn central defense, while Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton did the quiet work that champions need.

The turning point
The moment Leicester became genuine contenders came at the turn of the year, when the doubters expected the collapse that never arrived. Rival managers kept predicting a slip. Instead Leicester kept winning the tight games that champions win, grinding out 1-0 results and holding leads that better funded teams would have lost.
The title was sealed on May 2, 2016, without Leicester even playing. Tottenham needed to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to keep their own hopes alive, and when that game ended 2-2, the championship belonged to Leicester. The players had gathered at Vardy’s house to watch, and the room erupted as the final whistle blew.
Why it will never happen again
Leicester’s triumph stands alone because the economics of soccer make it almost impossible to repeat. The club’s entire starting eleven cost less than a single star at Manchester City or Chelsea. The gap between the richest clubs and everyone else has only widened since that spring.
