The club was founded in 2009 and is backed by the Austrian energy drink company Red Bull. It plays its home matches at the Leipzig Stadium. The club rose through the lower divisions of German football at considerable speed, reaching the Bundesliga within seven years of its founding.
Since establishing itself in the top flight, RB Leipzig has finished as Bundesliga runner-up on more than one occasion and has been a consistent presence in UEFA Champions League competition. The club won the DFB-Pokal in 2022, its first major domestic trophy.
The current squad includes goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, along with defenders and outfield players such as Castello Lukeba and Benjamin Henrichs. Younger players including Elvis Bitshiabu and Max Finkgräfe have also featured in the squad in recent seasons.
