Over the course of the twentieth century, Werder established itself as one of the more successful clubs in German football, winning the Bundesliga title on several occasions and claiming the DFB-Pokal multiple times. Their most prominent period came during the 1980s and 1990s under coach Otto Rehhagel.
The club also achieved success in European competition, winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1992. Werder has a reputation for developing and attracting technically capable players. Current squad members include goalkeeper K. Hein, M. Kolke, midfielder A. Schlager, defender M. Friedl, and forwards F. Agu and Abdoul Karim Coulibaly. Green and white are the club's traditional colours, and they remain a well-supported side in northern Germany.
