Uruguay is one of the oldest and most successful national football teams in the world. The Uruguayan Football Association was founded in 1900, making it among the earliest in South America. The team has won the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1930 and 1950, and has claimed the Copa América on fifteen occasions. Uruguay also won the Olympic gold medal in football in 1924 and 1928, achievements that established the country's early prominence in the sport.

The team plays in light blue shirts, a colour historically associated with Uruguayan football identity. Despite the country's small population, Uruguay has consistently produced players of high international standing. The current squad includes experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, defenders Ronald Araújo and José Giménez, and midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Valverde, all of whom play regularly for major European clubs.
